InoTec SCAMAX 8x1

Editorial Type: Review     Date: 01-2014    Views: 7971

German manufacturers InoTec are still not as well known in the UK as they are across Europe, but having been producing successful scanner solutions since 1992, there is no doubt they are doing something right

The company's emphasis has always been on the 'heavy duty' end of the scanning market, and its latest 8x1 range continues this trend. Make no mistake, these are very fast scanners compared to most of the devices we look at in the pages of Document Manager: the 801CD model boasts a rated speed of 160ppm (320ipm), the 811CD 220ppm (440ipm), and the fastest of all, the 821CD runs at 300 ppm (600 ipm).

As you'd expect from German designers, the new SCAMAX is robust and industrial looking, while remaining smoothly high-tech. It features a number of clever functions that clearly show that InoTec researches its target market in depth, and makes its products to suit their real world requirements. It is designed to offer both high-volume solidity and reliability, combined with high resolution scanning for optimum data integrity.

Performance scanners in production environments get a lot of use on a daily basis, so expectations are high. They have to be easy to use, capable of ultra-reliable paper handling, and ideally have a long and trouble-free lifecycle. One area in which the SCAMAX 8x1 range stands out is its ergonomic considerations for user comfort - the scanner has an easily adjustable height changing capability, for example, which can be pre-programmed to remember each individual user's preferred setting. The whole machine rises or drops at a single touch when operator shifts change, reducing physical stress issues with volume scanning.

In fact most of the scanner's functions are easily accessed and modified via the highly intuitive full colour touch-screen control panel connected to the device - this again has been developed with ease-of-use as the top consideration, including simple pictograms and easy process flows.

The 8x1 scanners all come with a straight-through paper feed setting for thicker documents up to 2mm, allowing separator sheets, barcodes or other specified documents to be sent to their own separate hopper (this is optionally capable of upgrading to 5mm thickness if required for cards etc.). Other options include double input hoppers (each holding up to 1000 sheets) to enable uninterrupted scanning, a second output hopper for separate collection of different documents, and MICR/barcode readers. Accessibility to replaceable parts is simplicity itself, for uncomplicated maintenance - essential for 24/7 availability.

The SCAMAX 8x1 range is available to UK users via scanner specialists Genus IT, and will doubtless be of interest to organisations who might previously have thought their options were limited to Banctec or ibml offerings. For those environments where users need to scan very large volumes, varying document formats and quality, at high speeds, InoTec aims to live up to its promise: "SCAMAX document scanners start where others stop".

VERDICT
At the risk of reproducing every cliché in the book about German manufacturing, there is little question that InoTec's SCAMAX devices are designed and built to take everything that the modern capture environment could throw at them, and more. These are serious scanners for serious scanning operations.
