IRIScan Pro 3 Wifi

Editorial Type: Review     Date: 09-2014    Views: 4105

IRIS have a wide and varied portfolio of software and hardware products that have one thing in common - they all exploit the industrial-strength capture and recognition technologies that made the company's name. Whether an office device or a mobile scanner such as the IRIScan Pro 3 Wifi device reviewed here, all IRIS solutions are very good indeed at digitising documents

So what makes the IRIScan Pro 3 Wifi stand out? The answer - or at least part of it - is in the product name. It has been designed to make it easy to connect and sync with devices (not just PCs, you notice) via a wireless network. It has inbuilt memory (128mb, expandable to 32GB via a useful SD card slot) for saving scanned images before sending on to their destination device/application. It is fairly lightweight (around 800g) given that it has a built in battery (chargeable via USB), but still feels robust and sturdy enough to be carried around in a laptop bag or backpack.

Unusually for a mobile scanner it includes a very neatly designed foldout document feeder for up to 8 pages at a time, which all fits cleverly into the lid when not in use. It also has a separate slot for scanning ID/bank cards on a straight through path.

The IRIScan Pro 3 Wifi is controlled by one single touch panel and LCD display, allowing the user to easily select options such as JPG or PDF output, colour or B&W, and resolution (300 or 600 dpi), as well as the output destination (SD/PC or wifi). It is supplied with a more than decent software bundle: ReadIRIS Corporate 14 for OCR (which includes a new Cloud Connector for streamlined export directly into EverNote, DropBox and Google Drive), CardIRIS for business card recognition and management, as well as IRISFile 12 which offers basic document management/workflow functionalities for users without a destination DM system in place.

For use with mobile devices (tablets as well as smartphones) IRIS offers the IRIScan app for IOS and Android. The app allows users to select images from either the synced wifi scanner, the photos folder on the device, the device camera itself, or even images stored in the cloud. Document images once selected are automatically optimised (straightened etc.) and the user is presented with output options including compressed PDF (which can be up to 50 times smaller than non-compressed equivalents), searchable PDF, text or Word file or JPG image. This file can then be routed as desired to email or again to cloud services.

When the time comes to connect the IRIScan Pro 3 Wifi to your PC, it includes a TWAIN driver so will easily integrate with existing DM software as necessary. Overall the IRIScan Pro 3 Wifi constitutes a very neat and funky mobile device that is more than capable of interfacing with a user's 'proper' document management systems when required.

VERDICT
We are seeing a lot of ultra-portable scanners these days, and most offer some wi-fi connectivity - what sets the IRIScan Pro 3 Wifi offering apart is its genuine mobile capabilities: battery powered and with onboard memory, it's the first such device we've seen that doesn't require a computer at all at any point in the capture process.
